PERFUME GENIUS - BOSTON, MA 6.12.2025

Coverage by Adam W Gerhold

Intimacy and chaos. I’m not sure the two often go together, nor are they regularly compiled together in such a way as by Michael Alden Hadreas: Perfume Genius.
Intwined were the likes of wires, an exercise ball, mic stands, extremities, chairs, step ladders, our combined eyes, ears, and senses, fixated on the demanding performance in front of us. The range in Hadreas’ vocal ability and the movements of the band matched with the intense and often physically demanding performance of Hadreas was in all sense of the word: Amazing.

The performance opened with a few tracks off Perfume Genius’ newest LP, Glory. Songs included, “In A Row,” “It’s A Mirror,” and, “No Front Teeth.” The set felt timeless. It felt like no time had passed but we had maybe been there for longer than imagined. It was nice actually, and we were set back to reality, unfortunately, with an incredible Perfume Genius-styled performance of “Fade Into You,” by Mazzy Star and the empowering, “Queen.”
